Dek: With a median of 7 employees, the firms in this index are lean by design. But their websites tell a different story.
“Lean powerhouse” is a flattering label. It suggests efficiency, focus, and punching above your weight. And in many ways, the firms in the WMLPH – Wealth Managers: Lean Powerhouses index live up to it: they manage significant wealth with small teams, serve sophisticated clients, and operate in one of the most competitive industries in finance.
But their digital presence tells a different story. The average firm in the index carries 2.4 UX violations on its homepage. 357 firms (37.1%) have no clear value proposition. 77 (8.0%) show no social proof or trust signals. 76 (7.9%) have buried or missing contact paths.
These aren’t firms that lack resources. They’re firms that haven’t applied their operational discipline to their digital front door.
#### The Size-Experience Mismatch
With a median team size of 7 employees, these firms don’t have dedicated digital marketing teams. That’s understandable. But the result is a paradox: firms that pride themselves on meticulous financial planning are presenting sloppy, generic, or confusing websites to the very clients they want to serve.
The most common violation — “weak or vague headline” — affects 99.1% of firms. In a typical case, the homepage headline says something like “Building Wealth Together” or “Your Financial Journey” — phrases so generic they could apply to any firm in any industry. For a prospective high-net-worth client comparing three advisory firms in a browser tab lineup, this is a disqualifier.
#### The Fiduciary Standard, Applied to UX
RIA firms are bound by a fiduciary standard — they must act in their client’s best interest. That same standard should apply to their website. A confusing homepage with no clear CTA, no value proposition, and generic stock imagery is not acting in the prospect’s best interest. It’s making them work harder to figure out if this firm can help them.
The firms that will win the next decade of wealth management will apply the same rigor to their digital experience that they apply to their investment process. The data shows that day hasn’t come yet.
