Off The Record: Why 96.2% of Top Staffing Firms Don't Exist in AI Search

Only a handful of the industry's biggest names show up when buyers ask AI for help. Everyone else is absent.

The staffing and recruiting industry generates over $180 billion annually in the United States alone. Yet when prospective clients turn to AI-powered search tools to find their next staffing partner, they encounter the same tiny roster of names — over and over again.

An analysis of 1213 staffing and recruiting firms in the SRTR - Staffing Recruiting - Top Revenue index reveals a striking visibility gap: only 46 firms (3.8%) appeared in any combination of branded or non-branded search queries. The remaining 1167 firms — including many with substantial annual revenues — are functionally absent from the AI search landscape.

The analysis tested each firm against 10 search queries, including eight non-branded industry queries ("best staffing firms in the US," "top recruiting agencies," "top staffing companies for technology jobs," and others) plus two branded queries per firm. The results were unambiguous: visibility in AI and web search is concentrated among a tiny elite.

Robert Half led all firms with a visibility score of 94.0 out of 100, appearing in 9 of 10 queries. TEKsystems and Insight Global tied at 88.0, each surfacing in 8 queries. Randstad USA, Kforce, and Aerotek clustered at 82.0.

The drop-off after the top tier is steep. Below the top 10, visibility scores plunge toward zero. Firms with hundreds of millions in annual revenue — firms that employ thousands of recruiters and place tens of thousands of workers — simply do not register in the search results that increasingly shape B2B purchasing decisions.

What separates the visible from the invisible? Brand scale is necessary but not sufficient. Several firms in the index with over $1 billion in annual revenue still scored zero. The visible firms tend to share certain traits: they maintain active digital presences, have strong domain authority built over decades, and appear frequently in third-party publications. The data shows an association between these characteristics and visibility, though it cannot establish that any single factor causes higher search placement.

For the 96.2% of firms sitting at zero, the implication is significant. As AI-powered search becomes a primary discovery channel for B2B buyers, the firms that don't appear in AI answers aren't being evaluated and aren't entering the consideration set.
