Dek: Generative Engine Optimization is the new frontier. Here’s a data-driven framework for wealth managers who want AI to recommend them.
Traditional SEO was about keywords and backlinks. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about becoming the answer. And for wealth management firms, the data shows almost nobody is playing this game yet.
The WMLPH – Wealth Managers: Lean Powerhouses index analyzed 1,245 firms and found that 83.4% had no detectable marketing automation on their website, 99.1% had weak or vague homepage headlines, and only 1 firm appeared in any non-branded AI search results. This represents both a crisis and an opportunity.
#### What AI Models Look For
AI language models synthesize answers from patterns in their training data. For a wealth management firm to appear in AI-generated recommendations, it needs to be:
1. Cited in authoritative sources — industry publications, ranking lists, news coverage 2. Structured for machine readability — schema markup, clean HTML, logical content hierarchy 3. Consistently publishing — fresh, topical content that feeds the training pipeline 4. Clearly positioned — unambiguous about what the firm does, who it serves, and where
#### The WMLPH Data Reality Check
According to the index, 69.8% of firms publish recent blog content — a decent starting point. But only 48.7% have a current copyright year, suggesting many of those blogs are on otherwise neglected sites. Just 2.6% list upcoming events. And 83.4% have no detectable marketing automation on their website — meaning they lack the visible infrastructure to nurture leads even if AI did surface them.
The firms that scored highest on visibility in the index shared three traits: (1) they had been mentioned in at least one industry ranking or publication, (2) they maintained active content operations, and (3) their sites were technically clean with fast-loading, mobile-friendly experiences.
#### A GEO Starter Checklist for RIAs
Based on the data, here’s what a wealth management firm should prioritize to become AI-discoverable:
Get cited: Pursue PR, submit for industry rankings (Forbes, Barron’s, Newsweek), contribute bylined articles Publish consistently: Blog weekly with data-backed insights, not generic market commentary Implement schema markup: Use FinancialService, LocalBusiness, and FAQ schema on your site Install marketing automation: Even a lightweight tool like Mailchimp or HubSpot (the two most common in the index) gives you the infrastructure to capture and nurture AI-sourced traffic Update your site: Current copyright, fresh testimonials, recent event listings — these are freshness signals
The AI search landscape in wealth management is wide open. The firms that move now won’t just be early — they’ll be alone.
