Fiduciary by Title, Generic by Homepage: The Trust Gap in Wealth Management Websites

Dek: Trust is the wealth management industry’s core product. But 8% of firm websites show no trust signals above the fold.

Wealth management is, at its core, a trust business. Clients hand over their life savings, retirement funds, and generational wealth to people they believe will protect it. Yet when it comes to their websites — often the first touchpoint a prospect encounters — the trust signals are alarmingly absent.

According to the WMLPH – Wealth Managers: Lean Powerhouses index: 77 firms (8.0%) show no social proof or trust signals above the fold 179 (18.6%) use generic stock imagery instead of real team photos 357 (37.1%) have no clear value proposition

#### What Trust Looks Like Online

For a wealth management firm, trust signals include: Client testimonials or case studies (within compliance boundaries) Industry certifications prominently displayed (CFP®, CFA, AIF®) Media mentions and ranking badges (Forbes, Barron’s) Team photos — real people, not stock imagery AUM figures or client count (where permissible) Years in business — longevity is a trust proxy

The index data suggests that most firms rely on their fiduciary status as an implicit trust signal. But “fiduciary” is a legal term that most consumers don’t fully understand. The firms that translate fiduciary responsibility into visible, tangible proof points will differentiate themselves in a sea of sameness.

#### The Stock Imagery Problem

179 firms (18.6%) use generic stock imagery on their homepage. In wealth management — an industry where personal relationships are paramount — this is particularly damaging. A smiling couple on a beach or a handshake photo communicates “template,” not “trust.” When every other firm uses the same library of images, differentiation becomes impossible.

The fix is simple and low-cost: use real photos of your team, your office, and your community involvement. It’s the single fastest way to stand out in an industry drowning in visual sameness.
